Building Sustainable Websites

Have you ever considered how a website can have an impact on the environment? I had not thought about this until I attended Brighton SEO and listened to a very insightful talk by Fiona Brennan.

Why should we care when we are small business owners, if we do not take individual responsibility then we have a massive problem, let’s not store up problems for the future and start changing the way we do things today.

When I returned after the event I could not wait to put my website through the test! I visited websitecarbon.com and popped in my domain. As you can see my results that my website is above average compared to most global websites! Fantastic. Whilst you are waiting for your site to be analysed they have some great facts to make you think!

You can fly the whole population of London to New York and back for less carbon than a year of TikTok

How Can We Make A Difference and become more sustainable online?

Do you post content just for the sake of it? Are you just following what you have read? Post regularly for reach, and post on ALL platforms, it is all about eyes on your content? If this is the case then STOP!

Have you carried out market research? This is scalable but you will know who your audience is and where you get the most interaction and the most engagement on your posts. It is exhausting posting on all platforms if you are just posting because you have been told by “experts” you need to keep up the momentum to get likes and views. For instance, I do a post or two on my website and then I share where my audience is, if it is about business then LinkedIn or Facebook. For photography, I would share on Instagram and Facebook. I am not that present on any other platform. I have not got time to do much more as work and family life is important as well. All of this adds up to the effect on the sustainability of my business.

Look at your business and develop a strategy test. Platform > Does it fit with your business?

A day of Chat GPT prompts takes about the same energy as fuelling 5.5 homes for a year.

The Framework

Now you have an understanding of what you can do to reduce your carbon footprint let’s talk framework. Having a framework that you can return to before each post will be valuable to your business, it will make sure that you are creating content that services your business and making you a profit.

Ask yourself what is the purpose of the post? Are you posting to make a sale? Do you have an offer that you want to share? Are you sharing some important information? Are you sharing your expertise?

What impact is the post going to have? Sales? Lead generation?

How is the post going to gain momentum? What do you hope to achieve for your business, is the content meaty enough to be content that will be linked too? Shared? referred to again and again? This will give your business the best chance in a world where content is shared with not much thought, even less since AI is used constantly.

Last but far from least profit. How much profit can you see coming from the content? Look at your analytics, and find the content that is converting. This is what your website needs to achieve. Be the expert make sales.

Thanks for taking the time to read my post, I hope that it will help you to structure your online presence and take the worry / stress of posting everywhere just for the sake of it. Just be the expert in your business.
