Capturing the Crimson: A Session at Darts Farm Poppy Field

There is a brief window every year when the landscape of Devon transforms. At Darts Farm, that transformation comes in the form of a sea of vibrant red. This week, I took my camera (and my favourite four-legged model, Winnie) down to the poppy fields for an informal shoot to capture some of that seasonal magic.

The Power of Natural Contrast

As a photographer and designer, I’m always looking at how colours interact. The poppies at Darts Farm provide a masterclass in natural contrast. The saturated reds against the deep greens of the stalks create a visual tension that is both striking and harmonious.

Adding Winnie into the mix provided the perfect focal point. Whether she was peering through the blooms or sprinting along the paths, the informal nature of the shoot allowed for those "in-between" moments that posed sessions often miss.

Pro Tip: When shooting in high-contrast environments like a poppy field, timing is everything. We caught the light just as it began to soften, allowing the red petals to glow without losing detail in the shadows.

Why Informal Shoots Matter

While much of my work at Blu Digital Designs focuses on strategic brand architecture and high-end automotive shoots (like our recent work with the BMW Z3 and Land Rover Defenders), these informal sessions are where the creative battery recharges.

They serve as a reminder that:

• Authenticity is Key: Not every shot needs to be over-engineered. Sometimes, a dog and a field of flowers tell the best story.

• Color Inspires Design: The palette from this shoot—crimson, sage, and golden hour amber—is already sparking ideas for upcoming web design projects.

• Practice Makes Perfect: Every event is an opportunity to test new angles and lens depths before the next major commercial project.
